A content-first brand strategy and visual identity for the US media platform Topic

Topic is a media company that aims to reshape and influence 21st-century storytelling, and to reject the frenzy of the 24/7 news cycle. The brand prides itself on being a content-first platform, giving creators the space to produce compelling and truly unique work. As part of a small agency team, I collaborated closely with the client to develop a brand strategy and visual identity that would help elevate Topic above the typical mass media customer, and prepare them to grow into a subscription-based media brand to rival the established players.

STORIES IN FOCUS

The brand idea we developed, ‘Stories in Focus’, informed the design system. The frame device is based on an aperture. It evolved into a full design language for Topic’s offline and online experience.

MODULE DESIGN

The design system for the platform is based on the frame device. The shape itself and the negative space around it are used together in a clean, easy-to-navigate digital layout.
